Wuzhen is an ancient water town on the Lower Yangtze River Delta1.All of it seem to claim the title“Venice of China”or the“Venice of the East”.Why is this comparison used?These old towns were built over systems of canals2that were used in ancient times instead of roads.The canals connected up with major rivers in the area and then on to the Yangtze and the Grand Canal that extended to Beijing.The area’s major commodities3such as silk textiles4were sold and traded along these routes.

烏鎮(zhèn)是長江下游三角洲的一個水鄉(xiāng)古鎮(zhèn)。這一切似乎都印證著“中國的威尼斯”或“東方威尼斯”的美譽。為什么要用這樣的類比呢？這些古老的城鎮(zhèn)建在古代使用的運河水道系統(tǒng)上，而不是陸路上。運河連接了該地區(qū)的主要河流，然后連接到了長江和延伸至北京的大運河。該地區(qū)的主要商品，如絲織品，就通過這些航線進行銷售和交易。

Location地理位置

Wuzhen is located about an hour north of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province right off the Grand Canal,which is called Tongxiang County.Practically speaking,it is easy to get to from Hangzhou,Suzhou and Shanghai and can easily be made into a one day trip.

烏鎮(zhèn)位于浙江省杭州市以北約一小時車程處，就在京杭大運河一側的桐鄉(xiāng)縣。實際上，從杭州、蘇州和上海去烏鎮(zhèn)都很容易，去一日游很方便。

There are two major parts to Wuzhen for tourists to visit.It is divided into East part(Dong Zha)and West part(Xi Zha)and requires an entrance ticket for each.According to many,the East Area is much more touristy5than the West Area so if you have to choose,you may want to focus your time in the West Area.

烏鎮(zhèn)有兩個主要部分供游客游覽。它分為東（東柵）西（西柵）兩部分，兩個區(qū)都需要門票。根據(jù)眾人的經(jīng)驗，東柵比西柵更加旅游商業(yè)化。如果你要二選一的話，你可能更想集中時間游玩西柵。

Architecture6建筑

The architecture of Wuzhen is typical of this region.Buildings are low—usually two stories—though some have three or four.They are made from gray brick that is then either whitewashed or overlaid7with wooden paneling8.Roofs are covered with black tile9.Inside the homes,the floors are wood and outside the paths are all stone and connected by stone bridges.The wood cladding10gives the town a much warmer feel.

烏鎮(zhèn)的建筑是這個地區(qū)的典型風格。建筑物很低，通常是兩層樓的，但也有一些是三層樓或四層樓的。它們由灰色磚砌成，然后被粉刷成白色或嵌以木板。屋頂蓋的是黑色的瓦片。屋內地板是木制的，外面的道路都是石頭鋪成的，并與石橋連接。木材的使用讓這個小鎮(zhèn)有了更溫暖的感覺。

The Venice of the East東方威尼斯

Every water town I have visited from Zhouzhuang to Zhujiazjiao and now to Wuzhen claim the same title.It doesn’t really matter;all of these villages have picturesque11old quarters.Some villages are better than others.Wuzhen is by far the nicest water town I’ve visited so far.

無論是周莊或朱家角鎮(zhèn)，還是如今說到的烏鎮(zhèn)，我去過的每個水鄉(xiāng)都被冠以了同樣的名頭。這真的不重要；所有這些村莊都有風景如畫的古老街道。有些村莊比別的更好。烏鎮(zhèn)是迄今為止我去過的最美的水鄉(xiāng)。

What makes it so nice?For one,the old quarter itself is much larger.In truth,this simply means that the local government restored12much more of the old town than other local governments have done.But the restoration13itself seems to have been painstakingly14done.Furthermore,the shops,tea houses,guesthouses and hotels are nicely kept without garish15signs in the front or pushers of horrible tourist trash on the sidewalks.Therefore you get a much more authentic16feel for the town without constantly stepping around silk scarves being thrust in your face by desperate17vendors18.What I’m saying is that the look and feel of Wuzhen is much less obviously touristic19than other water towns in the area.

是什么讓烏鎮(zhèn)如此美好？首先，舊街區(qū)本身要大得多。事實上，這僅僅意味著這里的地方政府比其他地方的政府修復了更多的老城區(qū)。但修復本身似乎是煞費苦心了的。此外，商店、茶樓、客棧和酒店很好地保持了原樣，并杜絕了擺放在門前的花里胡哨的招牌或者在人行道上推銷討厭的旅游垃圾的小販。因此，如果你不用總是躲避被如狼似虎的小販們招呼到你臉上的絲巾，你會得到更真實的感受。我想說的是，比起這個地區(qū)的其他小鎮(zhèn)，烏鎮(zhèn)看起來給人的感覺沒有那么明顯的旅游商業(yè)化。
