The 1936 Olympic Games had been handed to Berlin before the Nazis came to power but now it was the perfect opportunity for Hitler to show to the world how efficient the Nazi Germany was. It was also the perfect opportunity for the Nazi to prove to the world the reality of the Master Race. By the time over 4,000 athletes from 49 countries arrived in Berlin, the stage was set for Nazi to show off.

Germanys superstar of the time was Luz Long, a long jumper. By far the most famous athlete in the world was Jesse Owens of America—an African and therefore, under Nazi ideology(意識(shí)形態(tài)), inferior to the athletes in the Germany team.

The “racially inferior” Owens won four gold medals in the 100m, long jump and 4×100m relay. During the Games he broke 11 Olympic records and defeated Luz Long in a very close long jump final. The German was the first to congratulate Owens when the long jump final was over. There were 10 African Americans of the American team. Between them they won 7 gold medals, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes—more than any national team won in track and field at the Games. Hitler refused to hand over the gold to Owens. Germany won only five combined gold medals in mens and womens track and field, but face for the “master race” in the overall medal count with an 89—56 margin(差數(shù))over the United States.

The one area where the Nazi seemed to excel(超過)was in the use of radio for the reports. Twenty transmitting vans(轉(zhuǎn)播車)were provided for foreigners along with 300 microphones. Radio broadcasts at the Olympics were given in 28 different languages.

Feeling tired? Under too much stress? Well, you may want to try Yoga. Its what more and more people are turning to to let go the trouble of modern life. Practically unheard of in the West until 50 years ago, Yoga has become one of the most popular health trends around the world, including China. If you search for Yoga online in Chinese, lots of pages are there to see, most of which are main pages of Yoga clubs. In order to keep fit and lose weight, many girls spend more than 1,000 yuan taking part in Yoga classes every month.

However, are you really ready for it? There are several things you need to know before you really take it.

First, do not force your body too much. Yoga has many difficult poses. They are beautiful and worth showing off if you could finish them. But if you force yourself to do as exactly as an experienced Yoga teacher does, you may hurt your body, instead of strengthening it. Do you remember your original purpose of playing Yoga? It is self-building.

Second, do some research about the Yoga class that you are registering. Yoga is new in China and there are not so many certificated(持有職業(yè)培訓(xùn)證書的)well-trained Yoga teachers. Some not well-organized clubs just find someone having learnt a little Yoga and certificate them. But you should know a non-eligible teacher might wrongly guide you and you could not benefit from the classes much except that they force you to exercise your body a bit. Considering about the large amount of money you put into it, its worth and reasonable to make sure the teachers in the club are qualified before you join.

Third, it would be better to learn something about nutrition(營養(yǎng))when you practice Yoga. In the very beginning, Yoga was part of the Vedas, Bible of the traditional Indian philosophy. So it could be regarded as a kind of lifestyle. When you have decided to care for your body, why not feed it properly? In fact, good clubs have their own nutritionists.

Anyhow, make sure you are ready before you act. The fashion may change quickly, but what benefits is still good for us.

        5. What does the underlined word “eligible” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?

        A. Honored. B. Qualified.

        C. Hi-technical. D. Experienced.

        6. Which of the following is the authors advice?

        a. Find out a real teacher.

        b. Join one of the highest Yoga clubs.

        c. Know some knowledge about nutrition.

        d. Dont easily follow the fashion about Yoga.

        A. a, b, c B. a, b, d

        C. a, c, d D. b, c, d

        7. What can we conclude from the advice offered by the author?

        A. Yoga is somehow easy to exercise.

        B. Yoga has nothing to do with culture.

        C. Many people learn Yoga in order to compete.

        D. Not all the Yoga clubs have standard teachers.

        8. Whats the main purpose of the passage?

        A. Let people know more about Yoga.

        B. Tell people how to relax themselves.

        C. Advise people on taking part in Yoga classes.

        D. Tell people that Yoga has gotten its popularity in China.

Lennardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in Italy.

He is best known as an artist today. One of his famous paintings is called Mona Lisa. However, Lennardo had many other natural abilities. 1 Many of his inventions have become important in modern day life.

Although Lennardo hated war, he invented many different machines used for war. His most special invention was the machine gun, which was produced in war many years later.

By watching the way birds fly, Lennardo tried to find out the secret of flying. Among his sketches(素描)we can see many objects. 2

Lennardo spent many hours thinking about how to make good use of time. He developed ideas for labor-saving machines like cutting machines. 3 He didnt cut any meat, which was very unusual in those times.

Lennardo never published his ideas and specific discoveries. He usually used mirror writing, which looks like writing in the mirror, starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left. 4 Lennardo finished only a few of his paintings. He left many unfinished because he thought they were not perfect.

5 We now believe, however, that he was one of the cleverest men the world has ever known.

        A. He was also a great inventor.

        B. Lennardo was a strange man.

        C. We have very little of his work today.

        D. We consider them as modern flying machines.

        E. No one in his life time knew how great Lennardo was.

        F. Lennardo invented some machines to make good use of time.

        G. Lennardo was strange; for example, he enjoyed drawing flying machines.

When Sir Winston Churchill, the great British Prime Minister, reached his eightieth birthday in November, 1954, he was presented with his portrait by a well-known modern artist, Graham Sutherland. The painting had been ordered and paid for to 1 the grand old man of World WarⅡ.

Sir Winston and Lady Churchill were deeply moved by this 2 of respect and affection. Neither of them, of course, allowed the others to 3 how much they both disliked the portrait. “It makes me look 4 , which I am not!” protested Churchill in private, he only remarked that it was a good 5 of modern art. His friends smiled. It was known that Churchills didnt 6 modern art.

Churchill was so unhappy about the portrait that finally his wife had it 7 . Churchill died at ninety in 1965. Lady Churchill 8 him in 1977. Shortly after her death, the public learned what had happened to the 9 , and a heated argument broke out. The painter was understandably 10 . The artist community, shocked and 11 , said that the destruction of the picture had been a crime. Historians said that they 12 the disappearance of a historical document. Graham Sutherland had told Churchill that he would 14

him “as he saw him”. Churchill never had a 15 to see the work in progress since the painter 16 to show it to him. He found out only 17 he received his present that Sutherland had seen him 18 a heavy, sick, tired old man. Since he 19

old age, he was naturally hurt.

Who has the right to deal with a work of art, the owner, the donor, or the artist who 20 it? Was the portrait a good one, as many (including the painter) said? Or was it bad as others thought? None of these questions have been answered yet to everybodys satisfaction.
