After a challenging 2015 of lower arrivals and higher room stock, luxury hotels in Bali are bracing for a tougher year with more new rooms opening, more unlicensed private villas and a high-end market that is at risk of stagnating under uncertain economic times. But the more new hotels open, and the fewer rice fields and traffic-free roads there are in over-commercialized Bali, the more Four Seasons Resorts believes that staying authentic in product and service will help it outbid the new players, many of them contemporary in style and feel.

Authenticity, Rao said, has become the bigger battle than, say, innovation as Bali evolves into a chic destination. When the resort opened in 1993, innovation was the key; it was the world's first large-scale luxury villa resort and the first to feature plunge pools in every guest villa. \"For us, authenticity is not just in the product. The experience needs to be authentic,\" Rao said.
Asked what hotels are doing to give guests the real Bali where there is less, Rao said properties do take things in their hands to try and bring the experiences outside and within the resorts. It's all in the programming. At Four Seasons Jimbaran, for instance, there are more shrines than the Four Seasons brand has hotels – over 100 little shrines dotted around the 'village,' each with a story of its own. A shrine tour has been created with staff from a cultural committee guiding guests on the tour. There is also a tour of the on-site temple on-site, along with a tour of its lavish garden of tropical plants and trees, and an art and cultural tour of the sculpture collection throughout the resort, which depicts spiritual images and scenes of everyday life.
The secret to creating authenticity, said Rao, is \"you must want it.\"\"For lack of a better word, you need to be stubborn about it and have owners and a corporate office that are supportive, and a designer that is buys into it,\" Rao added. \"Owners, corporate people, designers, operations, sales and marketing all have a view of what needs to be done, but at the end of the day you need to come back to the question: What is it that the guest is looking for? \"We are guest-centric. We even share our favorite restaurants outside the hotel, although it's not in our interest, but because we know guests want to experience Bali.\"

Four Seasons Resorts operates two properties in Bali, both owned by Singapore tycoon Ong Beng Seng. The second, in Sayan, completed phased renovations of its 42 villas and 18 suites a year ago. Phased renovations of the 147 villas at Jimbaran will be finished by this year. In fact, Rao was promoted last year to helm both properties after three years as general manager at the Sayan resort. \"The timing is good as when the market is back in full swing, we'll be ready with our new villas,\" said Rao, who is going on a road show in the U.S. this month to showcase the two resorts.
