so that意為“以便;為了”時(shí),常用來(lái)引導(dǎo)一個(gè)表示目的的狀語(yǔ)從句,此時(shí)可與in order that換用;從句謂語(yǔ)中常用情態(tài)動(dòng)詞may/might, can/ could, should, would等;主從句間連接緊湊,沒(méi)有逗號(hào)相隔。如:
I spend more time learning English every day so that (in order that) I can make greater progress this year.為了在今年取得更大進(jìn)步,我每天用了更多的時(shí)間學(xué)英語(yǔ)。
so that意為“因此;所以”時(shí),常用來(lái)引導(dǎo)一個(gè)表示結(jié)果的狀語(yǔ)從句,此時(shí)不能與in order that換用;從句中謂語(yǔ)根據(jù)需要使用相應(yīng)的時(shí)態(tài),主從句間可有逗號(hào)相隔。如:
Wang Lin did not work hard enough, so that she is out of work when she is still young.王林工作不夠努力,因此年輕時(shí)就失業(yè)了。
so that既可以引導(dǎo)目的狀語(yǔ)從句,也可以引導(dǎo)結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句,如何區(qū)別呢?我們可以從以下兩點(diǎn)進(jìn)行辨別:
(1)根據(jù)句子結(jié)構(gòu)辨別
從句謂語(yǔ)中含有情態(tài)動(dòng)詞may/ might, can/ could, should, would等,這時(shí)so that引導(dǎo)的是一個(gè)目的狀語(yǔ)從句;從句前面有逗號(hào)和主句相隔時(shí),so that引導(dǎo)的是一個(gè)結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句。試對(duì)比以下兩個(gè)例句:
He didn’t plan his time well, so that he didn’t finish his work in time.他沒(méi)有把時(shí)間計(jì)劃好,結(jié)果沒(méi)有按時(shí)完成這項(xiàng)工作。
Yesterday morning Miss Li got up early so that she could catch the first bus.昨天早上李小姐為了趕上早班車起床很早。
(2)根據(jù)主從句邏輯關(guān)系辨別
so that引導(dǎo)目的狀語(yǔ)從句,一般表示尚未完成的目的或意圖,主句和從句之間是結(jié)果與目的的關(guān)系;而so that引導(dǎo)的結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句則是表示主句所導(dǎo)致的結(jié)果,主句和從句之間是原因與結(jié)果的關(guān)系。試比較:
I gave my new telephone number to Li Lei so that he may call me when necessary.我把新的電話號(hào)碼告訴給李雷,以便必要時(shí)他可以給我打個(gè)電話。
I told Li Lei my new telephone number so that all of them called me when necessary.我把新的電話號(hào)碼告訴了李雷,因此,必要時(shí)他們都給我打了電話。
so that和so...that看上去很相似,它們之間有什么區(qū)別呢?
“so...that...”句型的意思是“如此/這么……以至于……”,常引導(dǎo)結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句。
1. so... that句型中的so是副詞,常常用來(lái)修飾形容詞或副詞,常用句型為:主語(yǔ)+謂語(yǔ)+so+形容詞/副詞+that從句。如:
He was so angry that he couldn’t say a word.(so后接的是形容詞)
The boy ran so fast that I couldn’t catch him.(so后接的是副詞)
2. so that ...(以便/為了……),引導(dǎo)目的狀語(yǔ)從句和結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句。如:
He spoke at the top of his voice so that the students at the back could hear him.他說(shuō)話聲音很高,為的是后面的同學(xué)能聽(tīng)見(jiàn)。(目的狀語(yǔ)從句)
He spoke at the top of his voice, so that the students at the back heard him.他說(shuō)話聲音很高,結(jié)果后面的同學(xué)都聽(tīng)見(jiàn)了。(結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句)
