The capital of Sichuan province in south west China, Chengdu is a fourishing city, naturally endowed with fertile plains amidst picturesque landscapes of mountains and rivers. Historically and culturally rich, this ancient city is rapidly modernising into an emergent metropolis and a thriving economic centre. Located within the rejuvenated western Tianfu (“Heavenly Country”) district, Capitamall Tianfu occupies the very heart of the Xin Nan Tian Di commercial zone. Strategically anchored along Chengdu’s main North-South axis that connects the old city to the new administrative centre, this one-stop integrated development comprising 1 ofce tower, 3 residential towers and an 8-storey shopping mall, leverages on its excellent visibility from the elevated highway to capture the attention of daily commuters. As a visual landmark with distinctive character and personality by day and by night, the development efectively becomes its own“billboard”, designed to create a desire in passers-by to make it an en route destination.
Drawing references from Chengdu’s natural heritage, the design of Capitamall Tianfu adopts a geological metaphor that is inspired by the rock formations, peaks and ridges of the city’s famous Qingcheng Mountains, translated into the contemporary high rise as a rich blend of architecture and nature. The building form is approached like a gargantuan mass of stone, chiselled and sculpted to reveal crystalline volumes and facets, like sparkling jewels rising amidst a sprawling dull and grey landscape of heavy infrastructure and generic concrete buildings. “Crevices” between the sculpted volumes at podium level, on the other hand, read as narrow “ravines” filled with luxuriant vegetation from terraced gardens and cascading waters. These create a natural foci for the surrounding retail clusters that beneft from these refreshing outdoor views. Landscaped sky gardens are further extended up into the towers, multiplying greenery vertically throughout its height and making nature accessible to residents and ofce workers.
The garden theme extends into the interior of the mall as well, which acts like a greenhouse/conservatory featuring a variety of lush indoor plants around an ice skating rink (entertainment atrium) on the 4th storey, where visitors can learn about tropical trees. Using lights projected through perforated aluminium, mottled shapes resembling the underside of tree canopies further add to the sensation of being in a huge tropical rainforest, while a large digital ceiling above the ice skating rink simulates the changing skies.
To compensate the overcast and dusty climate of Chengdu that renders its buildings visually flat and uninteresting, Capitamall Tianfu is made distinct and differentiated in colour and texture. Design considerations were given to contrast, reflection, strong materiality and tectonic expression via a light, crisp and colourful material palette comprising geometric crystalline aluminium cladding, perforated metal and glass. “Polished” facets become animated surfaces for festive banners, advertising logos, restaurant and retail display windows while the elegantly proportioned glass curtain walls of the ofce and residential towers mirror the dances of clouds in the “Heavenly Country” sky. Perforated aluminium panels, on the other hand, take cues from abstracted patterns of Chinese openwork grilles, functioning both as privacy screens and flters for natural day light. Special fa?ade lighting behind these panels further give the building a strong night time presence and visual impact, simulating stars across the blanket of night.
Ultimately, the large development is symbolic of a “mini Chengdu”, a vibrant micro city in and of itself. It sets out to ofer a new lifestyle paradigm that builds upon the cultural inclinations of its citizens, who are a social and urbane people, enjoying activities in their city, parks and cafes. To provide new opportunities for visitors to engage in these rituals, the podium roof is designed as an extensive Commercial Plaza, ofering an urban space for families, youths, seniors and ofce workers to people watch, interact, dine, skate and participate in concerts/events across a myriad of landscaped decks, playgrounds, gardens and recreational spaces. This rooftop Commercial Plaza is designed to be part of the retail loop connected to the atrium urban spaces below, thereby creating a continuous and fully integrated retail experience.
