I. 安德松。

        PREFACE

I still keep the inaugural issue of Landscape Architecture journal that was published in 2005. Today, when I read this issue again, in which the landscape of Shenzhen Luohu Port designed by Shenzhen BLY Landscape & Architecture Planning & Design Institute and SWA Group was featured on the cover, I could not help but exclaim that how time flies. It collected essays contributed by Zhou Guangzhao, Sun Xiaoxiang,Meng Zhaozhen, Nial Kirkwood, Arnold Schmidt,Peter Latz and etc, with a wide range of contents from green ecosystem, urban sustainable development and the metamorphosis of derelict sites. At that time, the publication of Landscape Architecture was just initiated and most of the editors lacked experiences. What would be the future then? “It is the first step that costs troublesome and well begun is half done. But the next half is a total different journey, and there is still a long way to go”. The congratulations by the honorary Editorin-chief Meng Zhaozhen were very inspiring but also brought some pressure for us.

The topic of the first issue in 2006 is Wetland, which is then one of the hot issues in landscape architecture profession. Landscape Architecture has always been on the leading edge of the profession and paying attention to the sensitive questions. Problems concerning with landscape architecture becomes more and more comprehensive and complicated. Many researches and solutions need collective wisdom of multi-discipline. Landscape Architecture also advocates the research of other subjects. For example, this issue published the article the Adjustment of the Chinese Forest Development Strategy and Green GDP written by Honorary President of Landscape Architecture Yin Wenlun, which helped to increase the awareness and recognition of eco-environment and eco-economy among the landscape architecture profession. In addition,Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical was featured on the cover, which is a master piece of academician Meng Zhaozhen and is also a cohesive effort of many elder teachers of Beijing Forestry University.

The topic of the first issue of 2007 is Modern Landscape Design in the West. The development of landscape architecture research and practice enjoyed fast growth and landscape architecture began to cover the areas that were not familiar to us. Therefore, we need to expand our vision to understand, study, and learn the outstanding achievements and successful experience of the world. There is barely any design magazine that limits its vision within one area or one country. Landscape Architecture also requires its own global vision. Hong Kong Wetland Park was covered on this issue. Most of our peers visited this park and could be inspired when they read the cover story. The happiest thing for Landscape Architecture is to gather the first hand research and practice from China and overseas to introduce to its Chinese readers and meanwhile, it offers opportunities for Chinese landscape architects to present their works to the world.

The first issue of 2008 introduces two icons of landscape architecture. One is Professor Sun Xiaoxiang from Beijing Forestry University. He is the supervisor for my postgraduate study, who help many young students established good professional concepts, thinking mode and design capability, which benefit them for all their life. Professor Sun also gives great support for Landscape Architecture. He once hosted a column Sun Xioxiang’s Interpretation of Earthscape Planning and Landscape Architecture in Landscape Architecture. The other icon is Danish landscape architect S. I. Andersson. I come to know Nordic design by visiting and reading the works of S. I. Andersson. I appreciate the Nordic designers who care about the needs of ordinary people and adopt suitability, simplicity,high-quality and economy as their values. Landscape Architecture also has its own values, which is to publish high-qualified research and projects that suit the common values of landscape architecture profession.

The topic of the first issue of 2009 is Landscape Architecture and Sustainable Urban Development, which is a topic concerned by the whole world, and is also a serious topic that China needs to confront at present and in the future. China is paying the price for its rapid development in the past 30 years. The over-exploitation of common resources leads to soil devastation while excessive emissions of waste results in heavy pollution. But there are also some precious chances for landscape architects to renovate every piece of land that are destructed by human activities, to integrate the complicated lands and infrastructures in the city, and to transform the grey infrastructure into green ones and to turn the cities that are based on civil engineering into ones based on ecology, which will help cities to obtain sustainable development. Landscape Architecture will continue to pay attention to this research topic.

The cover of the first issue in 2010 is a landscape designed by Maya Lin. No matter how we stress the scientific properties of landscape architecture, we could not deny its artistic properties. Landscape architecture itself belongs to art and will always be related to art. Landscape architecture also influences other arts. For example, Cao Xueqin’s novel is unfolded in a garden, and there is a great deal of piano music of Liszt that depict the Villa d'Este and the lotus of Monet is the image of his own garden. Landscape architecture is also influenced by other arts. The garden of Noguchi is like his sculptures, and the landscape of Walker is implicated by minimal art.Like other arts, the best landscape architecture projects can definitely touch people’s heart. Therefore, all kinds of arts are concerned by Landscape Architecture. It has published many research and works of garden arts, public arts, installation arts, and paintings as well as sculpture. It is believed that the ideas of artists will be inspiring for landscape architects.

The topic of the first issue in 2011 is Eco-Design,which is currently a popular principle in landscape architecture profession and is also what Landscape Architecture mainly concerns about. This issue also carries out a transformation in its layout and has a new Logo. The Jiangyangfan Eco Park designed by Atelier DYJG is featured on the cover. We also contribute an article to tell the story about the concept design, schematic design, construction coordination and completion of this park. It is not an easy job to design and build Jiangyangfan Eco Park, which is very different from many other normal gardens in Hangzhou. All credits should be paid to the support and hard work of many people. Without their help it cannot be finished. This is the case of Landscape Architecture. During the ten years, there are so many people who deserve a “thank you”, including authors, consultants, editors, partners, sponsors, and readers, all staff of Landscape Architecture and etc. Unfortunately, due to the space limitation, I cannot list their names one by one.

The topic of the first issue in 2012 is World Natural and Cultural Heritage, which are the important fields of landscape architecture profession. China is endowed with a great number of heritages and because of the increasing fervor to apply world heritage sites, the research and protection of listed heritages become more and more important. In addition to world heritages,Landscape Architecture is more concerned about the normal natural and cultural landscapes in China, which are confronting a huge challenge. We tend to ignore the cultural heritages inherited from our ancestors and replace them with the “newly-designed culture”; likewise,we don’t respect the surrounding landscapes and easily change them to the newly-designed “nature”. There is always tear-down, reconstruction and then tear-down and reconstruction. Both natural and cultural landscapes are not well respected and cherished. The natural and cultural characteristics of China are fading away. Therefore,Landscape Architecture hopes to make a contribution in conserving the unique national landscapes of China.

The topic of the first issue of 2013 is Digital Technology and Landscape Architecture. Information, data, digital technology and internet are rapidly changing our way of life. With the change of urban -rural structure, and urban form, landscape architecture within a city or a town will be changed as well. What is the future of the landscape architecture? Perhaps, design will be only functioning as a database, and there will be no blueprint,no construction team, and the whole construction can be printed by the 3D printer. Perhaps, the use of digital earth can scientifically, directly, and dynamically imitate the influence of every project on the Earth’s ecological system. Each of us has his or her vision for the future. Who can actually control the future? And what kind of breakthrough in what areas can lead human beings to a healthy and wonderful future? Landscape Architecture not only pays attention to the past and now, but also explores the future.

The topic of the first issue of 2014 is Urban Biological Diversity. We have been used to skyscrapers, the hustle and bustle of urban life and landscapes created by rows of trees and lawns. Only a few citizen may still remember that variety of species also co-existed in our cities several decades ago. And people would think that biological diversity is no longer important to us. We have damaged the complicated and diversified ecosystem in cities, and we have forgotten that a complicated ecosystem is more capable to defend and recover from environmental destruction. The diversity of landscape and ecosystem are the basis of the regional ecological safety. To a magazine, under the premise of our publication goals, we encourage diversity, and hope to learn more thoughts and theories that can give people implications and reflection, which will be beneficial for the development of landscape architecture profession. .

The topic of the first issue of 2015 is Landscape Performance. Nowadays, each project requires performance to assess or predict the achievement and benefit that this project has or is about to obtained. It is time for Landscape Architecture to clear up and re-plan its performance. Landscape Architecture has published for ten years with the endeavors of many people. A retrospect to the past is a conclusion to the performance in the past; while a plan for the future is a vision for its performance in the future. Beginning with this issue, the bimonthly Landscape Architecture has turned into a monthly journal and will still opportunely advocate the latest research and projects of landscape architecture from China and overseas.

Unlike the first issue of the journal in 2005, it now has accumulated 10 years of experience, and so do our staff. We are still looking forward to the future. But what future will look like? Let’s use the congratulations written by Academician Meng Zhaozhen for the first issue as our final words for inspiration: “It is the first step that costs troublesome and well begun is half done. But the next half is a total different journey, and there is still a long way to go”.
