        2015-04-12 00:00:00

Reported by Zha Bin, Fan Zhu and Gu Hui

Translated by Li Yi and Zhu Luqi

When it comes to high-risk jobs, many people will first think of the “Spiderman” out of skyscrapers, or the peacekeepers who are sent to war areas, however, many jobs in society which seem to be decent hide unknown high risks. This time we have interviewed some people from six different industries, and they will tell us the unknown stories behind their jobs one by one.

        The Redemption for Psychologists

“I am expensive, and paid by hour”, "it is what Xu Ruining, a psychologist says in The Great Hypnotist. He is a famous hypnotist in the movie, but finally he fails to redeem himself. It is the thinking The Great Hypnotist leaves to us: how can psychologists be redeemed.

There are various vocations in the world. People who take up one kind of vocations need to get along with dangers and they may encounter deaths suddenly. Such kind of vocations are known as high-risk vocations, such as coal miners, building workers and firefighters. If we redefine risk, you may find that some groups of people face larger risks without noticing them. These risks are invisible and intangible, but they are nearby, for example, the above mentioned psychologists.

Before interviewing psychologists, I was guessing that whether psychologists are tougher than others, whether they face heavier pressure than others and whether these negative feelings or pressure affect their living and mental status. With these questions, I interviewed Han Sanqi, a senior psychologist. However, from the talk with him, I got some answers that are different from what I had anticipated. Admittedly, Mr. Han is only one of the many psychologists in the world, his experience and thoughts cannot reflect the situation of every psychologist, but from the talk with him, we can at least have a better understanding form a perspective of this industry itself and perhaps get to know more about risks, pressure and career choices.

Fields of Vision: What are most of the psychological counseling cases like?

Han Sanqi:Most of them are about 30 years old. The problems they come across focus on self-improvement, such as self-abasement, interpersonal conflicts, pressure relief, marriage and love affair problems, career planning and some mild neuroses.

Fields of Vision: What is the largest difficult for a psychologist?

Han Sanqi: Since that I lay great emphasis on the training of professional qualities, I am one of the first group of psychologists who received national qualification training and passed the national qualification appraisal. In addition, I like philosophy all the time and therefore my humanistic foundation is good. So everything has gone smoothly since I took up the vocation and I have not encountered great challenges or pain. However, if there must be some difficulty, it mainly lies in that the social environment does not have much recognition of psychological counseling, such as mixing psychologists up with psychiatrists, thinking that people who receive psychological counseling are mentally abnormal, not realizing the value of psychological counseling and not willing to pay for counseling. Of course, people who are willing to receive psychological counseling are not the majority. It is normal, because there are not many people who have psychological concerns which are serious enough for them to refer to psychological counseling. Most of people can overcome the psychological disturbances by themselves and only a small part of people need the help of psychological counseling.

Fields of Vision:Psychologists need to face to many counselees, will they be affected by their negative feelings?

Han Qisan: Psychological counseling is just a vocation which is not special. Those how add values to themselves are not mature counselors. They exaggerate the effect of psychologists in psychological counselings. Psychological counselings can have effect only if counselees are willing to change, which is fundamental. If the counselees are passive all the time, and do not cooperate, however good the psychologist is, he/she cannot help. Besides, though psychologists face problems of visitors, their motions will not be disturbed by them, for example, I cannot regard the concerns of a visitor as my concerns , which is to say, if the visitor fails in an love affair, I will not think that I also fail in an love affair. Of course, some psychologists who have not received enough training of career skills will be affected by the concerns of visitors, they cannot tell their psychological boundaries from those of the visitors. Such psychological counselors usually have their own unsolved problems and they should solve the problems with the help of psychological counselors first.

Fields of Vision: Will you feel frustrated if the counselors do not accept your treatments or suggestions at last?

Han Sanqi: It will not frustrate me, because only those psychological counselors who overestimate their ability will feel frustrated. A psychological counselor is not a decision maker in the psychological counseling, it is at most a supporter. No detailed suggestions will be given and how to choose depends on the visitors themselves. Of course, if the visitor is not suitable, I will introduce him/her to other psychological counselors. It is a common practice of psychological counseling. Visitors can stop the counseling according to their own judgment. Especially when the visitors are not satisfied with the counseling effect, psychological counselors will not force them to continue. Introducing visitors to other counselors is an important technology that psychological counselors need to master when they receive career training.

Fields of Vision: Will you look into the people around you? And will you judge them or give them suggestions based on your own expertise?

Han Sanqi: I have never done that, because I am a psychological counselor who makes a living on the vocation. I do not give free counseling and on a large extent, the value of psychological counseling depends on whether it is free or not. Nobody will cherish things that are free. In addition, if I always analyze others, it is the same as making myself in working status all the time, and it will make me exhausted.

Fields of Vision: How do you relieve pressure when you come across difficulties?

Han Sanqi: The advantage of psychological counselors is that they can recognize the difficulties and pressure they meet earlier and at that time it is not difficult to deal with them. The difficulties and pressure of most people are difficult to deal with because they did not realize them in time, or when they realize them, the situation becomes severe and they do not have much to do with them.

For the Prison Guards, the Prisons Also “Imprison” Them

Tang Hao, 28 years’ old, has been working as a prison guard in a prison in Jiangxi Province for three years. The interview with him made me know more about the career within the high walls. Tang Hao said that prison as a relatively close environment has to run with the military management and high alert, which makes the prison guards stay in a constant state of cautious and nervous. It requires 24 hours’ duty every day, and they have to be on duty in turn. The psychological status of the prisoners and also the emergency situations can be very hard to predict, therefore the guards cannot relax the vigilance. It’s just like the old saying “trembling with fear, and treading on eggs”. Some guards said, “I’m not afraid of scolding or criticizing, but I’m afraid of phone calls coming in the middle of the night”. Everybody faces the challenges carefully every day. That’s a high level of tension caused by strong responsibility, and is also a symbol of the royalty to career.

The isolated and tedious environment also directly influences the guards’ way of perception and thinking, making them tend to have psychological problems. Tang Hao told me that working here every day is like living on a remote and lone island. The prison is closed, so everything there has the features of close. If you are a fashionable modern people, you probably cannot stay in prisons. It doesn’t need too fresh or active ideas, but only obeying orders. Working in prisons needs the constant updates of knowledge, but most of the prison guards don’t usually read books or newspapers in the daily life, mostly because there is no time. Tang Hao said that it’s very common to hear a guard say “I’m an uncouth man”, and he feels sad every time he hears it. If it’s always like this, what this work will become? Some of the prison guards’ knowledge, experience, and insight cannot compare with the prisoners’, and if they don’t improve themselves, then who is reforming whom?

Because the group of people they are in touch with at work is very special, most of the prison guards won’t tell other people what they do, but refer to themselves as “police” in general. Some prison guards think their social status is very low, and is inferior to other kinds of police, belonging to the “Second-Class Police”. Plus there are some prejudices and discriminations towards prison guards in society, which makes their psychological state unbalanced. Tang Hao said he sometimes feels confused about his profession. As a young man, he feels his youth is consumed fast in such a large cage, and he cannot acquire social recognition and professional fulfilment. The reformation of criminals is so evident. Many criminals have served their sentences but the guards are still in it. That’s what “Set Term for Prisoners But not for Prison Guards” means. Except for pursuing further education, many guards cannot go out of the “walls” to communicate with other people, to breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the resources outside.

All these pressure make this profession a highly “potential risky” one a present. The risks cannot be seen or touched, but they exist in the daily life of the prison guards. In response, the government has promulgated many intervention policies for the prison guards’ psychology, but it requires more people’s understandings.

The life within the high walls needs more attention in the future.

        Investigative Journalists’ Path of Righteousness

The man sitting in front of me wears navy blue leisure suit, the one with many pockets. His face is pale, and the pair of glass makes him look smart and well-educated. If you look closer, you can find the black rim of eye on his face. He speaks very fast, as if he cannot wait to tell you something. He is probably the kind of guy will disappear in the crowd according to his appearance. But just because of this, he becomes an investigative journalist that can disguise himself and conduct undercover investigation. He is Shen Zhimin, an investigative journalist working in a newspaper office.

        Undercover investigation for the truth

Shen Zhimin is quite experienced and he had many undercover identities, including migrant worker, beggar, and hotel waiter. He treats disguise as the means of investigating for truths. He can perfectly act as various people living in the bottom of society and blend in successfully.

When he conducted undercover investigation in Foxconn, he disguised himself as an ordinary migrant worker without any skills and tried and tried again on Foxconn. After several days of keeping watch, he was officially hired by Foxconn and entered the factory. At there, he saw the nets built up high around the buildings, covering tightly all the buildings, which made people feel oppressed. The daily routine was quite rigid. Under the high pressure of working, his workmate can only had fun by burning cigarette scars on the arm and said to him, “l(fā)ook, brother, how beautiful the scar is.” This kind of working environment made healthy people have psychological problems. Even some security guards and cleaning workers became judges for all the staff. If there were some unqualified behaviors, several points would be taken down, and if you have points taken down three times in a row, you would be fired. Shen Zhimin said, “In that place, all the workers lived at the bottom of the biological chain. There was no guarantee, and anybody could crush their dignity.” The things that cannot be seen by outsiders are the truth sought by undercover investigative journalists. It requires the power of social public opinion to correct the administration of Foxconn, and with this idea in mind, Shen Zhimin’s recoverage is even more sincere and outstanding.

Investigative journalists always face various dangers, especially on the way of seeking truths. Shen Zhimin told me that once he was on the way to Miyun, Beijing to investigate illegal mining, he encountered several dangerous situations. In daytime, the car they drove was broken by nails and people from the mine threatened them and tried to stop them entering the mining zone. In order to get the first-hand evidence, they snuck into the mining zone at night. On a slope where the ironstones were placed, they took the risks of being discovered and beaten and took the valuable photographic evidence.

Such dangers come along with this career, and it has become very common in Shen Zhimin’s experience of undercover. In fact, in most cases, it’s just you scare yourself. In his words, it’s “people scare people.” The dangers were actually only for verbal level, and in his entire career, he has never come across actual dangers.

        Righteousness and lies

In Shen Zhimin’s heart, every undercover investigation is for the justice in his mind, and also for the righteousness of society. Investigative journalist is not only an occupation for him, but “justice with endless power”. Many undercover tasks are threatening but not dangerous, which prove the “power of justice”.

When he worked as undercover in a hotel, he witnessed how the staff wiped the excrement and urine in toilet with towels. This kind of deceiving behavior and the conscienceless enterprise should be exposed. As an investigative journalist, he has to lie in the process of undercover. He has to lie to his boss and his co-workers, and at the same time he has to search for the evidence. It’s like walking in the shades of truth. Therefore, in his opinion, investigative journalists must guard their own bottom-line: “Only lie if I have to.” He used his real name and ID on every mission, and every lie was told when the mission is not finished but he was about to be exposed.

Shen Zhimin got a very important point during working as an investigative journalist. He believes “The truths uncovered by the journalists should not only be damages, but also a kind of correction, which enable some immoral behaviors of some people or some institutions to be changed by the power of justice of society.” He thinks it’s a kind a soft power, and this kind of power changing our lives as well as the entire society.

        The Risky Life of Doctors

        of Enterprises

Being in front of me is a girl who looks capable and open-minded. Her bold eyebrows have been shaped carefully and her eyes are shining brightly, which shows the vigor of young people. She is Miss Li, the heroine today who is currently working for Deloitte Consulting. \"Our industry is famous for being busy, and working overtime is very common. Sometimes a business trip can take half a year to one year.\" Miss Li tells me her work situation of being busy plainly. She calls her occupation as \"a doctor of an enterprise\". Being young, she needs to take a tough stance when she is in face of the executives of many companies, or the work she has done will be in vain.

The job of a consulting company makes Miss Li a “flying trapeze” and a workaholic who often works overtime. When she takes projects in other places, she often needs to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning on time and work until midnight, and sometimes she even has to stay up. In addition to heavy work, her learning ability is also challenged, in that every time she has to adapt herself to the operating mode of a company and try to master it in a short time. This is a great challenge to the ability, energy and pressure resistance of an employee.

Being sleep-deprived constantly, she sees the consequence of a deterioration of her physical state and her skin becomes bad, even the most expensive skin care products cannot help with her black rims caused by the lack of sleep. In addition, her mental state is always very poor and the complexion is not good, which makes the family of Miss Li worried about her health constantly. Besides, people tend to overeat easily when they are under great pressure. During the process of taking a project for a few months, she puts on weight easily. Putting on weight is almost an enemy of all the women who are in their twenties. However, the job has brought Miss Li into a strange circle. Being fat, having poor mental state and so on, all these affect her gradually and make her an elite with sub-health.

When she is under particularly large pressure, Miss Li will choose to refer to the senior colleagues of the company. These senior colleagues will share their experience with her and also tell her how to face to and deal with many problems. These are like bright lamps which light up the road she is walking on. Since she can see everything, she can walk on more relaxed and calmly. Watching the back of the senior colleagues who fight with her, she can feel power gushes out of her body and put herself into work energetically.

The consulting industry has always been known as busy, having many business trips and with great pressure. But asked about whether she has thought about changing a career in such a high-pressure environment, her answers firmly: \"No, I have no plan to change a job, because there are still a lot of things to learn.\"

In addition to pressure which is brought by the career, being a woman has also once become the barrier of Miss Li when she is fighting in the workplace. As the traditional Chinese thinking maintains, women should not choose such harsh work and the worry from family and the whole society has brought great pressure to women. However, Miss Li is lucky because her husband understands the traits of her work, and does not have many requirements in the distribution of family duties. Since both of them are very busy, they understand each other and share responsibilities for the family.

Miss Li believes that another reason which makes her persevere is the power of examples. In addition to the senior colleagues of the company, actually there are some female colleagues who have opened a clear mirror for her career. As she has said, when she has large pressure, she will have a chat with colleagues to relieve stress, especially women who are under the same social pressure. Being elites, they understand each other. In the conversation, these beautiful and key employees of the workplace help her “debugging” her mental state frequently, and also provide guidelines for a template of life. Why women cannot fight in the workplace? With such senior colleagues, she has strengthened her conviction of continuing to improve herself in the consulting industry until one day she is capable of turning back gorgeously!

        Training Instructors:

Not Everyone Can Realize American Dream in China

Since the original interview canceled, I have to hand in this optional subject of “implicit high-risk occupations” – training instructors. I’m not willing to write this subject, because I’m afraid no matter how hard I try to express objectively, people would think I would descript the industry I used to work in with the mindset of “my ex is a freak”. So I decide to start from a successful case by interviewing an old friend of mine, Joy, who still strives in the training industry as a famous teacher.

When we choose the topic, every editor’s suggestion on subjects and interview cases should have relative reasons. When I point out my optional one is training instructors, I tell them that: there are many college graduates enter in this industry of high-salary, high-freedom as well as the students’ admiration. But with time passes by, due to physical and personal reasons, many of them quite the job and then are lost in career choice.

It was a few years ago when I begin to have this kind of feeling. At a night, my mother asked me why unhappy, I told her that, one of my friends A, who graduated in Chinese major from a famous university and worked in a training institution, wanted to change a job. And I happened to have a friend who worked as a HR supervisor in a media company, so I introduced A to the HR for acting as a go-between. Then the HR asked me two questions: “What are the difference do you think between her who taught English before and a fresh graduate in working as an editor?” “Would she still come, if we pay her with the salary of a fresh graduate?” From that day we start to think: if keeps working as a teacher, how long could it last as a profession for young people only? What else could we do when we leave training institutions?

When I put forward the interview request and explain the reason, Joy replies me in Wechat one sentence after another constantly. She says what I said was wrong and untenable, and I can clearly feel that she misunderstands and gets angry. I know I have to call her and tell her that: we choose the subject of “implicit high-risk occupations” is neither for digging the inside story or bringing negative information to others. We want to let more people know the uneasy part behind some shiny jobs and make more youths be better prepared when choose their careers. It is sure that, every job has certain risks, and we call it “implicit high-risk” is because it hasn’t be noticed and may happen to many people. It doesn’t mean it is an industry not be highly praised due to the risks, and we should learn from the winners who turn risks in to opportunities, just like you – Joy.

The training industry is like a mountain with so many people climbing it, but there is only a few who can step on the top of it at last. Joy still remembers the first time when she took part in the training for new teachers. Freshmen crowed in the hall-like room for listening to the principal’s training and everyone showed in the eyes the admiration to this industry dreaming to be one of those who can realize the American dream in China. “Your question reminds me of the words when I heard back then.” Joy is not angry anymore and understands my intention. “At that time, the principal said to us, you can either try to be a famous teacher, or a person who manages the teachers. Of course, there was not such a description of the latter one then, but it was about getting administrative jobs in training industry.” When thinks of the partners striving with her 8 years ago, Joy finds there is just a few left. When great waves sweeping away sand, if it is not famous teacher that needs not the amount of classes, then it should be administrators like her.

Joy really loves training industry. She says when in class, all annoyance goes away from the forum. The troubles she said refer to the difficulties when she starts to do operation management. Before doing project operation, many people have worked for a project before. But Joy has never done things like this. She has been a teacher for several years and directly changes into a project manager by the promotion of her leader since she did well as a teacher. “If considered the possibility of doing project management in the future at the beginning and learned the related stuff, it could be easier to do it now.” Occasionally, Joy would talk to me the difficulties at work, but she knows she has to grasp the opportunity and work well after complaints.

Joy admits that from this point of view, the training industry may have certain risks, since many college graduates only see a job with idol aura but not make a plan for their career path. And this industry just gets the feature of idolization that once you are not popular, you are going to be eliminated at any second. As for what else you could do, it depends on the sufficient skills and powerful mental adaptive ability you have got.

At the end of our conversation, I asks her again how to see the implicit high-risks in the training industry, she thinks for a while and says smilingly, “if my cousin suddenly said to me he wants to be a TOEFL teacher, I would say to him that, if you just want to make a sum of money for a gap year, you can pick up a summer holiday and earn a lot by having as many classes as possible; if you want to regard it as a job after graduation, you should think clearly which one do you prefer, a famous teacher or a successful administrator, if neither of them, then please reconsider it.”

Stationed Abroad: AK47 behind the Foreign Moon

Recently there is an Email of customer complain spreading on the internet, which is known as the most powerful one in history. A staff of Huawei posted a picture in his Wechat and claimed he had received the complaints from Taliban that, if the slow network speed couldn’t be fixed within one week, their station would be bombed.

It looks like a spoof, but for Fanyi it can be the real thing in his Wechat at any time. He is a staff of communication industry who is accredited abroad. In his Wechat, there are horrible news like the above one as well as tasted food and beautiful sceneries worldwide. It seems to many people that, employees stationed abroad of this industry are living a enviable life of high salary and double benefits who share pictures of food and scenery every day. However, only guys like Fanyi know that there is a AK47 behind this beautiful foreign moon.

Fanyi went into a famous communication company for oversea market expansion when he was just graduated as a postgraduate. At the beginning he also dreamed of the happy life when stationed abroad, but the fantasy was soon broken by the reality. He was accredited to South Africa, and before he getting used to the glorious and vast land, he had to adapt to the high strength work time arrangement. At his company, the average daily sleep time of staffs abroad is 3-5 hours. Fanyi has to stay at the customer company at daytime, analyze the day’s information and statistics after work and communicate with domestic experts for the next strategies of market development at night (China’s work time).

If you think working overtime for a long-term is the pressure they need to burden, then you would make a mistake, since the real pressure is from mental anxiety. Guys like Fanyi have to stay with customers for a longtime at day because they lack of experience and can only touch them by “personal service”. Their foreign competitors always send staffs with related international working experience, who can provide technical guidance for clients. For Fanyi and his colleagues, they are just freshmen, when facing the elites opponents, Fanyi asks himself everyday: what should I do tomorrow? How can I do to get the group of customers? And the only thing they could do is to tightly follow them and tell the domestic experts the customers’ demand and ask for advice.

The high working strength and pressure are mental high risks, but they make Fanyi develop faster than others. What’s more, working abroad often let them be in an environment of high-stake. He shared with me some inconceivable incidents happened to his colleagues when at foreign countries.

Malaria: His colleagues were sent to Nigeria, where the malaria is widespread. They had to wipe thick oil and wear long-sleeved clothes to avoid mosquito bites. But it was too hot in that country. Finally, one day they washed all oil and changed into short-sleeved clothes. Then some of them got malaria three times in a short time and fortunately not with a life risk.

AK47: Also in Nigeria, one day, one colleague walked in the street. And suddenly he was pointed to the head by a AK47 and asked to hand in all the properties. He remembered a friend was gun-robbed on the road too and the muzzle of the gun was still warm which meant it had killed a person just now. AK47 is not just for scaring people in the country.

Warfare: The communication industry belongs to the infrastructure of a country. So when guys like Fanyi doing oversea market expansion, it is not only in peaceful land but also includes areas of conflict all the year round like Iraq and Syria. Especially for post-war reconstruction, communication construction is absolutely necessary. But cease fire doesn’t mean there is no danger. Fanyi has seen a picture sent by his friend: when sitting on the bus, bullet hole suddenly appeared at car window and all passengers quickly crouched down on the floor.

Nuclear leak: Fanyi told me that besides staffs of oversea market development, those of technique service also face with high risk environment. Like in the Japan nuclear leak incident, communication recovery was the precondition for reconstruction. Since many of the infrastructures were built by Chinese companies, many maintenance staffs became the first group of Perdue, just like what they did in disasters like Wenchuan earthquake.

“You may have a friend works oversea and doesn’t send Wechat very often, since he is too busy to sleep. When he sends pictures, please believe me: there would be an AK47 behind the foreign moon.” At the end of the interview, Fanyi said this again and his calm looks makes others have to believe that he did hear and experience so many high risk incidences like the above ones, and he has already take them tightly.
