It may be a long time ago since you use a rubber. To say nothing of rubber, ball-pen is rarely seen in the electronic age of paperless office. In childhood, cutting a rubber and painting them is all that to do in a confusing class. How time flies! It is interesting to look back these memories. How do you feel if tak knife and carve the rubbers now again?
Today, Lingzi, from the office, takes me into carving time. She shows me several rubber-stamp pictures she made in her spare time. Honestly speaking, these pictures remind me of childhood and feelings at that time. Then we have a carving appointment in an afternoon.
Images or patterns on rubber-stamps can be anything you like or anything for special use. Flowers, ducks, cartoon characters and other childish images bring you back childhood; cheering sentences, a target etc. is always an activation. Filling life with pleasures, the tiny rubber-stamp carved by yourself has magic power to make you addicted to stamping.
Through a tough consideration, we finally decided to carve character “羴”, consisting of three Chinese character “羊” (means “sheep”), coinciding with Chinese lunar New Year of the Yang. Here we wish you good luck in New Year!
Let’s take a look at tools needed in carving, which is available on taobao:
1. Rubbers (it is suggested to buy rubber brick for carving instead of eraser)
2. Knife
3. Sulfate paper (for transfer printing)
4. Pencil
5. Pen knives
6. Inkpad
Hands carved rubber-stamp takes less time than stone carving or woodcarving due to its quality. Additionally, no complicated craft is need and any design can be carved as you want.
Transparent sulfate paper for transfer printing.
At first I even don’t know what transfer printing is.
The following is for fresh man like me: transfer printing is a process that you press the paper of patterns on rubber (pencil mark face to the rubber) and scrape it with hard object to make it print on rubber.
Next is inverse printing, which is to print the pattern of sulfate paper on rubber. Fix the paper with your left hand and scrape it with a metal piece to print the design on rubber.
Here is printed design.
Then is the key procedure which takes patience and carefulness: carving images.
According to Lingzi, it is essential to how to carve. Please take the knife pointing forward and close to your right hand, lean the knife and cut outside the lines to make a V-shaped flute. Clean excess rubber crumbs, you finish a line.
Devote to carving with patience and persistence!
This is a finished image with flute outside the lines. Next is to carve inside lines and then they are bulgy. After all lines are carved, the blank space can be engraved by knife. Pay attention that lines engraved should be thin and be careful in order not to cut lines off when engraving.

Seal by the rubber-stamps.
Every rubber stamp made with your own hands and every seal stamped is exciting. Even it is ugly, you are reluctant to throw it. How glamorous the rubber-stamp is!
A piece of rubber, a knife, several designs or patterns one likes carve a joyful time of you. This is the funs of rubber-stamp carving. Rubber-stamp is popular in Japan and South Korea in early times and now is admired by the youth around us gradually. Neither complex tools nor superb craft is necessary, all you need to design in a relaxed mood.
