(Susan is an 1)epidemiologist in Glasgow. Her boss Stephen asks her to go to hospital with him.)

Susan: So what are we wanted for?

Stephen: Er, to see a patient.

        Susan: Why?

        Nurse: What’s going on?

Stephen: Well, we’re just going to find out.

Nurse: You know he’s really pissed off in there.

Patient’s wife: Excuse me. When can I take him back home?

Stephen: Oh, well, we just need to talk to him, so... Patient’s wife: He needs to explain it all again?

        Stephen: Well...

Patient’s wife: Look. Look, listen. He called me up, right, and he told me he was coming home...and then all of a sudden his voice peaks and he bursts into tears.

        Susan: Mm-hm.

Patient’s wife: And then he starts telling me that he doesn’t see any meaning in life. I mean, he’s not usually like that. He’s a truck driver.

        Susan: OK.

Patient’s wife: And then he pulls over at the side and says he’s fine again. Except, he can’t smell any more.

Susan: He can’t smell any more?

Patient’s wife: Well, I told him, you find a hospital because, you know, that isn’t normal, is it?

(After Susan talked to the patient)

Susan: What do you want from me?

Stephen: I just want your opinion.

Susan: I’m an epidemiologist, Stephen. So why am I talking to this guy?

Stephen: Cos we’ve got seven more just like him in Aberdeen. Five in Dundee. 11 right here in Glasgow. 18 in Edinburgh. There’s over 100 reported cases in England. They’ve got them in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain. They’ve all appeared in the last 24 hours.

        Susan: How were they infected?

Stephen: I’m not sure they are.

        Susan: Meaning?

Stephen: Well, all the early indications suggest no connection between them at all. No contact. No pattern. Nothing. Maybe it’ll just go away.

        Susan: So we won’t panic.

        Stephen: Hm.

(Michael is a chef at a restaurant across the alley from Susan’s apartment. He knows Susan because he asked her for a spare cigarette once. Susan, just off-work, meets him again. )

Susan: Got your own smokes tonight, sailor?

        Michael: I’m still a chef.

Susan: My dad called everybody sailor. He worked in the docks all his life. He never went sailing anywhere but he called everybody sailor.

        Michael: All right.

Susan: Even people he didn’t know. “Hello, sailor.”“Goodbye, sailor.”

Michael: Well, you can call me sailor, if you like. Or Michael.

Susan: When I was a child, I thought it was really embarrassing. Now I’m doing it myself.

Michael: Are you hungry? People aren’t eating in restaurants these days and we’ve got a lot of spare food.(Susan is eating at Michael’s restaurant, and is suddenly overcome with grief.)

Michael: So what do you do...when you’re not eating? Susan: Death and misery.

        Michael: What?

        Susan: I’m an epidemiologist.

God...All that sailor stuff, it reminds me of him. My dad. I miss him so much. We had so much fun together. He could always make me laugh.

Voiceover: First, overwhelmed with grief. And then no sense of smell. That’s the disease. They call it Severe 2)Olfactory 3)Syndrome. SOS.

(Susan calms down, and finds she can’t smell any more. The same happens to Michael. They both catch the disease.)

        Michael: Hey.

Susan: It’s gone. The smell. All gone.

Voiceover: The greater loss are all the memories that are no longer triggered. Smell and memory were connected in the brain. 4)Cinnamon might have reminded you of your grandmother’s 5)apron. The scent of cut hay could evoke a childhood fear of cows. 6)Diesel oil might bring back memories of your first ferry crossing. Without smell, an ocean of past images disappears.

(People are struck by unreasonable fear, then a moment of hunger. After binging on food, they lose their sense of taste. At Michael’s house, Michael and Susan are talking.)

Michael: Do you think we’ll lose our other senses too?

Susan: Smell and taste are related. They’re the two chemical senses.

Michael: So the other ones might be all right, then? Susan: They might.

Michael: Just have to wait and see.

        Susan: That’s right, sailor.

(In the morning, Susan looks out of the window, and realizes they need to carry on.)

        Susan: It’s still out there.

        Michael: What is?

        Susan: The world.

        Michael: What can you see?

        Susan: People.

        Michael: What are they doing?

Susan: They’re heading off to work.

        Michael: What should we do?

Susan: We go to work as well.

Michael: Do we kiss each other first...

        Susan: Maybe.

Michael: ...say we’d like to see each other again?

        Susan: We probably do.

        Michael: Maybe even this evening.

        Susan: Maybe.

Voiceover: Slowly, things return to normal and life goes on. People do what they did before as best they can. Within a few weeks, taste becomes a distant memory. And different sensations take its place. In restaurants, it’s all about offering another person dinner, letting yourself be waited on, listening to the trickle of wine and the clink of glasses.

(The disease also carries on. A Thai scientist reports a new disease to Stephen through a video call.)

Thai Scientist: This is the situation here in Bangkok, Thailand. We call it Severe Hearing Loss Syndrome, and we still do not know much about it. Anger, rage, hate. And then they go deaf.

Virologist: And how does it spread?

Thai Scientist: I can’t hear you very well but I do not know what to do. Tell me what to do. …standing there looking at me! Why are you just…

Stephen: I think it’s OK to panic now.

Voiceover: And that’s basically what the world does. Severe Hearing Loss Syndrome. Spreads from Thailand, across India to China, Russia and beyond. Rage. Anger. Hatred. And then the loss of another sense.

(Because of the disease, Michael loses his mind and says something that really hurt Susan. When he calms down, he calls Susan to ask for her forgiveness. But Susan is suffering from the syndrome, and can’t hear him.)

Michael: I hope you can hear this. Whatever I said to you, I didn’t mean. It wasn’t me. It was the disease. Susan: Who are you!

Michael: I need you to come back to me. I need you to believe me. It’s me. It’s me asking you to come back.

Susan: Why, why, why, why, why? Why, why? Liars…Michael: I love you.

        Susan: You’re all f**king liars!

(The world is quiet now, people are trying to get their life back on their own. Some go back to work, some destroy things in the street. And just like a usual morning, people feel the urge to reach out to one another, to offer understanding, forgiveness, acceptance and love. They don’t care what they’ll lose next, they just run to reach the loved ones. Like Michael and Susan do. )

Voiceover: Once we thought of the ice age as something that crept up; glaciers slowly spreading, temperatures gradually dropping. But recently, a number of 7)intact mammoths have been discovered with stomachs full of undigested grass. The cold must have hit them like a blow from a 8)club. That’s how the darkness descends upon the world.

It’s dark now...but they feel each other’s breath...and they know all they need to know. They kiss...and they feel each other’s tears on their cheeks. And if there had been anybody left to see them, then they would look like normal lovers caressing each other’s faces...bodies close together...eyes closed...oblivious to the world around them. Because that is how life goes on. Like that.
