You wouldn’t steal a car. You would never rob a bank or pick someone’s pocket. But you may be another kind of thief.

If you have ever bought a disc for 15 yuan or less, then you have helped to rob artists or musicians of their intellectual property right (知識(shí)產(chǎn)權(quán)).

Last Thursday was World Intellectual Property Day. Activities to tell people about intellectual property right were held around the country.

Intellectual property includes inventions, literary (文學(xué)) and artistic works, names, and pictures. They are of little value if they are not read, seen and used.

While the cost of copying discs is very small, authors, singers and actors have to spend a lot of money and time making a new product. That’s why they have the right to make money from their work.

So buying pirated (盜版的) music of Mayday and Taylor Swift is like stealing from them, paying them no respect for their hard work.

If Mayday cannot make money from their work, they may not make anything else. But those who make pirated goods are becoming rich without doing any hard work.

The authors should ask for a fair price for their work. In the past years there was much talk about how much KTV should pay the music companies for using their songs.

The copyright fee (版權(quán)費(fèi)) also should be fair to the users. That’s good for the music’s popularity and society as well.

( ) 30. Which of the following do intellectual property rights cover?

        a. Inventions.

        b. Pirated music.

        c. Names and pictures.

        d. Literary and artistic works.

        A. a, b, cB. a, b, d

        C. a, c, dD. b, c, d

( ) 31. Which of the following is true?

        A. The copyright fee should be fair to users.

        B. Buying pirated music by Mayday is against the law.

        C. Authors should ask for a high price for pirated works.

        D. People have the right to make money from pirated

        works.

( ) 32. What is the best title for the passage?

        A. Rob a Bank.

        B. Copyright Fees.

        C. Say No to Pirated Music.

        D. World Intellectual Property Day.

        C

Have you ever heard of Iceland? Iceland is a country, one- tenth of which is covered with ice. However, it is said that Iceland is the land of heat. Smoking volcanoes (火山), white steam and hot springs are more amazing than the other sights including ice there.

It has taken millions of years for volcanoes and lava flows (熔巖流) to build Iceland. When hiking through one of Iceland’s many ancient lava fields, you may notice something strange. White steam is rising from each vent in front of you. Iceland is covered with vents which steam can pass out of. The steam comes from naturally heated rocks and hot water below the earth’s surface.

Like steam vents, hot springs can be seen here and there in the ancient lava fields. Blue Lake is the most famous hot spring in Iceland. It isn’t far from the capital city of the country. The water and white earth in it can make your skin as soft as a newborn baby’s skin. Enjoy that water, because it has traveled a long way. It starts nearly two kilometers under Blue Lake. There, water from the ocean continues moving up slowly into the spaces between hot rocks below the surface. And then the water is heated by hot rocks. Powerful machines and long pipes (水管) help bring the heated water to the surface. People in Iceland use natural hot water for hot springs. Besides, they use it to create electricity that can be used to heat homes and even greenhouses.

Iceland is one of the few places on the earth where active volcanoes lie below ice. Heat from the volcanoes creates a strange and wild beauty. Therefore, some people believe that it’s better to call the country “Heatland” instead of Iceland. If you have a chance to travel there, take it.

( ) 33. What are the most amazing sights in Iceland?

        A. Ice and hot springs.

        B. Smoking volcanoes and ice.

        C. Heated rocks, hot springs and new lava fields.

        D. Smoking volcanoes, white steam and hot springs.

( ) 34. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

        A. Iceland was built millions of years ago.

        B. Blue Lake is in the capital city of Iceland.

        C. Only Iceland has active volcanoes below ice.

        D. People in Iceland use natural hot water for hot springs.

( ) 35. What’s the best title of this passage?

        A. The Heat in Iceland.

        B. Volcanoes in Iceland.

        C. The History of Iceland.

        B. Hot Spring of Blue Lake.

        D

When you watch TV programs about wild animals, it is surprising to see how an antelope (羚羊) can run away from a strong lion. In the wilderness, everyone has his own way to protect himself. Even plants have their own ways to fight off enemies.

Over millions of years, plants have developed their own defense system (防衛(wèi)系統(tǒng)). Chemicals are fantastically used by plants to survive (幸存). By making their leaves, flowers, roots and fruits poisonous (有毒的) to enemies, plants can fight back.

One such plant is the Golden Wattle tree. The British scientist David Cameron has found when an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amount of poison increases in the other leaves. “It’s like the injured leaves telephoning the others to fight together against the enemy,” he said.

The tree also sends defense messages to neighboring plants by giving out a special smell. Golden Wattle trees in the nearby 45 meters will get the message and produce more poison within 10 minutes. Now, if an enemy eats too many of the trees’ leaves, he will die.

Every kind of plant or tree is good at producing a special set of chemicals. Herbivores, like rabbits, can safely eat the leaves of one tree, but they may be poisoned by its neighbor.

In this way, plants have not only developed their own defense system, but also shared it with others. This makes it impossible for a single animal to destroy even a small area of forest.

( ) 36. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?

        A. Plants can do nothing against their enemies.

        B. Chemicals are quite useful for plants to survive.

        C. An antelope can always run away from a strong lion.

        D. Leaves, roots, flowers and fruits of plants are poisonous.

( ) 37. If animals eat one Golden Wattle tree’s leaves, the tree can ___ .

        A. kill the animals with a special smell

        B. tell other trees to come to protect it

        C. warn other trees against the animals on the phone

        D. send defense messages to the neighboring plants

( ) 38. The underlined word “Herbivores” in Paragraph 5 means animals which ___ .

        A. produce poisonB. like to eat rabbits

        C. live on small animalsD. feed on plants or grass

( ) 39. The last paragraph suggests that the defense system is ___ .

        A. bad for animalsB. good for forests

        C. harmful to forestsD. helpful to some animals

        ( ) 40. What’s the passage mainly about?

        A. The examples of protecting forests.

        B. The balance between animals and plants.

        C. The ways of plants fighting against enemies.

        D. The relationship between plants and enemies.

        How to beat sadness

We all have days when we are down, tired and unhappy. That’s OK. You need days like this, or how would you know you are happy? You’ll enjoy your good days even more when you have a few bad days. Even if sadness is a part of life, let’s try to make it small. Here are a few simple ways to help you feel better when you are feeling sad.

        1. Stand up straight and this helps your energy flow (流動(dòng)). When your energy is flowing freely, you can flow, too.

        2. Smile! It’s easy to do and has good results. This way can not only leave you in a good mood but also bring others a good mood.

        3. Listen to music. It can be your favorite music. Some kinds of music work better than others, so try and find out what kind of music works the best for you.

        4. Take some “me” time. You can find pleasure in reading a book, watching a sunrise or having a hot bath, or something like that.

        5. Exercise. Even something as simple as taking a walk will get your blood flowing. It is a great way to clear your mind of anything that makes you sad.

These ways will cheer you up when you are down, but don’t just use them when you are sad. Try and practice them every day to make them a habit. You will be surprised to learn that these simple ways will keep your sadness away. But if you are in a deep depression (沮喪), go to see a doctor.
