Han Xin was a great general. When he was young， his mum and dad died（死）. He was very poor*， so he often went to a friend’s home to have dinner.

His friend’s wife* didn’t like him. One day， Han Xin went to her home， but she didn’t cook for him. Han Xin was very hungry and sad. He went fishing by the river， but he didn’t catch a fish.

There were some old women washing clothes by the river. Suddenly， an old woman came to Han Xin and said， “Here is some rice. Let’s have dinner.”

Han Xin thanked her and ate the rice. From then on*， the old woman gave him some rice every day.

Han Xin said， “Grandma， you are so kind. I’ll repay（報答） you one day.” The old woman said， “It’s only some rice. You needn’t（不必） repay me.”

Later， Han Xin joined* Liu Bang’s army（軍隊） and became a great general.* But he didn’t forget* the old woman. He invited the old woman to his home， and gave her a lot of gold.

The old woman said， “I just gave you some rice. I can’t take your gold.”

“No， your kindness is more valuable（寶貴的） than the gold.*” Han Xin said.
