Fifth Hangzhou Art Expo

The 5th Hangzhou Art Expo was held from May 23 through 28, 2012 at Peace Conference Center in Hangzhou, the capital of eastern China’s coastal Zhejiang Province.
The art gala is a supporting project of the annual West Lake International Expo. At the expo this year, more than 30 domestic and overseas art organizations combined to stage a recommendation exhibition and eight theme exhibitions at the nearly 10,000-m2 exhibition space at the center. Artists from China, France, Spain, Austria, Canada and Malaysia showed several thousand pieces of artworks in the form of painting, sculpture, pottery, installation art, image art and mixed materials.
The Hangzhou Art Expo promotes modernity, internationalism, scholarship and business, trying to create an art event reflecting the prosperity of modern visual art in Hangzhou that strives to create a life of quality and harmony for all of its residents. The organizers marketed the event by using standard methods. The expo serves as a showcase for art galleries, art institutions, and artists, and displays a wide range of latest high-quality artworks in various genres.
This year, the exhibitions highlighted local artists and their works. One of the most prominent artists at the exhibition was Sang Huoyao, now a deputy director of Zhejiang Art Museum. Sang presented his works at Venice Biennial in 2011, an honor that none of the other artists in Zhejiang has enjoyed. In fact, he is China’s first ink painter presented at Venice Biennial. The expo in Hangzhou in 2012 paid homage to Sang by holding an exhibition for visitors to see his works at Venice Biennial. One of the works on display was “Seven Sages in Bamboo Forest,” a painting that portrayed seven sages of ancient China. Sang painted the bamboos in ebullient reds. The bold color tone overthrew the conventional presentation of the symbolic bamboos, an image that traditionally embodies the leisurely style of the sages. Sang remarked that artworks integrating national tradition and modern philosophy will become more and more popular on market.
The “Exhibition for Recommended Young Artists,” the most important part of the expo this year, will tour Ningbo, Shaoxing, Jiaxing and Huzhou in July and August, promoting Hangzhou Art Expo and artists and their works. After the four-city tour, there will be an auction to market modern Chinese artworks. The organizers of the expo hope that this auction will bridge the gap between art and market and serve as a platform for cultural exchanges.
