A daughter complained (抱怨) to her father about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up.

有一個(gè)女孩向她父親抱怨她的生活，她覺得凡事都很艱難，不知該怎樣挺過去，想放棄。

Her father took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots (壺) with water and placed each on a fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. He placed carrots， eggs and ground (磨碎的) coffee beans in three pots and waited for boiling.

她的父親把她帶到廚房。他把三個(gè)裝滿水的壺放到火上燒。很快，壺里的水被燒開了。他在三個(gè)壺里分別放了胡蘿卜、雞蛋和磨碎的咖啡豆，然后等著水把它們煮沸。

In about twenty minutes， he turned off the burners. He placed the carrots， eggs and coffee in three bowls. He asked，“Darling， what do you see?”“Carrots， eggs， and coffee.” She replied.

大約二十分鐘后，父親關(guān)掉了火爐，把胡蘿卜、雞蛋和咖啡都弄出來，分別放在三個(gè)碗里，然后對(duì)她說，“親愛的，你看到的是什么？”“胡蘿卜、雞蛋和咖啡?！彼鸬?。

He asked her to feel the carrots. She noted that they were soft. He then asked her to break an egg. After peeling off the shell， she observed (觀察) the hard-boiled egg. Finally， he asked her to drink the coffee. She smiled， as she tasted its rich aroma (芳香).

父親叫她去摸胡蘿卜，她發(fā)現(xiàn)它們變?nèi)彳浟?。然后，他又要她去拿一個(gè)雞蛋把它敲破，在把殼剝掉之后，她觀察了這個(gè)煮熟的雞蛋。最后，父親要她飲一口咖啡。嘗著芳香四溢的咖啡，她微笑起來。

“What does it mean， Father?” she asked. He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity (逆境)—boiling water—but each reacted differently. The carrots was hard. But after being subjected (影響) to the boiling water， it softened and became weak. The egg was fragile (脆弱的). Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior (內(nèi)部的). But after sitting through the boiling water， its inside became hard. But the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were put into the boiling water， they had changed the water. “Which one is you?” He asked his daughter.

“這是什么意思，父親？”她問。父親解釋說，這三樣?xùn)|西面臨著同樣的逆境——煮沸的水，但它們的反應(yīng)卻各不相同。胡蘿卜很硬，但受到煮沸的水的影響后，它變得柔軟而脆弱。雞蛋易碎，薄薄的外殼保護(hù)著內(nèi)部的液體。但是在經(jīng)歷過煮沸的水以后，它的內(nèi)部卻變得堅(jiān)硬。不過，最獨(dú)特的卻是磨碎的咖啡豆，當(dāng)它們被放入煮沸的水之后，它們改變了水?！澳囊粋€(gè)是你呢？”他問女兒。
