A billboard in Hollywood, California, shows model Christy Turlington having nothing on. The headline reads, “I’d rather wear nothing than wear fur.” The billboard is part of new efforts by anti-fur groups. They want to persuade women not to wear fur. But the fur industry is fighting back.
One of the best-known anti-fur groups is People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). It says that animals are mistreated to make furs. PETA’s pictures show animals in dirty cages. And fur farmers kill animals in cruel ways. But a fur farmers’ group says they have to treat the animals well. Tim Sullivan is the group’s animal welfare(福利)director. “The only way you can produce quality fur is to produce quality care,” he said.
The two sides can’t even agree on how many people are buying furs. The Fur Information Council of America (FCA) is a group of businesses that make and sell furs. It says sales were up 10 percent. PETA states that fur sales are down. It says it has persuaded many women to stop wearing fur. But people in the fur business say PETA doesn’t have that much power. They argue that sales depend more on the economy and the weather.
The fighting often ends up on the sidewalk. Christy says women who wear furs care only about themselves. But fur wearers don’t agree.
“I can wear anything I want,” said one woman. “Why don’t these people put their efforts into working for the homeless, or abused(受虐待的)children, or something really important?”

Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle’s husband, an engineer, took his four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard of again. Eileen was astonished and lost all hope. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.
Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and without a note or a goodbye close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused(迷惑的)families behind them.
Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home—the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected(拋棄)the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity.
To those left behind, this form of rejection is a terrible blow. Even the death might be preferable. At least it does not suggest rejection. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a new marriage life.
Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes leaving home of this kind is well planned rather than impulsive. “It’s typical of the kind of personality which seems able to take no notice of other people’s pain and difficulties. Running away is like killing yourself, making the people left behind feel guilty(有罪的), upset and empty.”
60. When her husband left home, Eileen Doyle ___ .
A. could not forgive him for taking the children up
B. had been expecting it to happen for some time
C. could not understand why he had done so

C. will come back within a yearD. will have no right to remarry for 7 years
63. What does the underlined sentence suggest?
A. The leaver has a sense of guilt.
B. Leaving home in such a way is an act of caring only about yourself rather than about other people.
C. There is something wrong with their marriage.
D. It is pleasing to leave their debts and worries behind.

My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors told us firmly that with treatment he would be able to walk normally—but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn’t know he had a problem when you saw him walk.
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know.
In the seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others—perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn’t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn’t know.
He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day—even the day he had a 103 high fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. I asked him how he felt. “Okay,” he said. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn’t run four miles with a 103 high fever. So he didn’t know.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in the seventh grade—the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn’t expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn’t do it, so he didn’t know. He just did it.

70. It can be learned from the text that ___ .

B. Joey didn’t know he had a problem in walking
C. the author didn’t play any part in helping her son achieve success
D. the author didn’t tell her son the truth because she didn’t believe the doctors
A. Drug overuse and its consequence
B. The problem of drug overuse in America
C. Benefits of medicine and its wise use
D Female drug overuse with reference to that of males
E Misuse of medicine among the young generation
F. Improper use of medicine among senior citizens
71. ______________________
Nowadays, millions of people misuse and even overuse pain medications and other drugs. Research by the American National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA, 1999) shows that around 2% of the population over age 12 were using drugs non-medically.
72. ______________________
NIDA views medications as a powerful force for good in the contemporary world. They reduce and remove pain for millions of people suffering from illness and disease. They make it possible for doctors to perform complicated surgery to save lives. Many people affected by serious medical conditions are able to control their symptoms and become active, contributing citizens. NIDA points out that most individuals who take these drugs use them in a responsible manner.
73. ______________________
Nevertheless, overuse of drugs such as opioids, central nervous system (CNS) depressants and stimulants does lead to harmful trust in some people and is therefore becoming a serious public health concern. Although this abuse affects many people worldwide, particular trends of concern to the medical profession in the US appear among older adults, teenagers and women.
74. ______________________
Though it may be a surprise to many, the misuse of medications may be the most common form of drug abuse among the elderly. Dr Kenneth Schmader of Duke University, North Carolina states that although the elderly represent about 13% of the US population, those aged 65 and over lead to the reduction of one third of all drugs. People in this age group use medications roughly three times more than the general population and have poorer compliance(順從)with instruction for use. In another study of elderly patients admitted to treatment programs, 70% were women who had overused medicines.
75. ______________________
Unfortunately, this trend among women does not only affect those aged over 65. In general, among women and men who are using either an anti-anxiety drug or a sedative(鎮(zhèn)靜劑), women are twice as likely to become addicted. In addition, statistics of 12-17 year olds show that teenage girls are more likely than teenage boys to begin overusing psychotherapeutic(心理治療的)medication such as painkillers, tranquillisers, stimulants and sedatives.
