Jim is cutting a branch (樹枝) off a tree in his garden. While he is cutting， a man passes by the street. He stops and says， “Excuse me， but if you continue (繼續(xù)) to cut that branch like that， you will fall down with it.” He says this because Jim is sitting on the branch and cutting it at a place between him and the trunk (樹干) of the tree.

Jim says nothing. He thinks，“This is some foolish person who has no work to do and goes about telling other people what to do and what not to do.” He continues to cut.

The man goes away. Of course， after a few minutes， the branch falls and Jim falls with it.

“My God!” He cries.“That man knows the future!” So he runs after him to ask how long he is going to live. But the man has gone.

二An Old Miser

一個老守財奴

Mr. Smith is an old miser (守財奴). He has a lot of money， but he never buys anything expensive. He and his wife live in an old house outside the town. He often goes to the shop on foot in order to save some money. In the afternoon， as soon as it is dark in the room， he goes to bed.

The old man has no children. His wife is often ill. He doesn’t want to send her to the hospital. He thinks he will pay much to the doctors if they look her over. But he finds the poor woman has died. He hurries to the telephone， but changes his mind at once. He runs out and shouts to the servant (傭人)， “Don’t cook breakfast for Mrs. Smith this morning， Linda!

“Why did you make me go such a long way?” her mother asked her. “Well， Mum.” answered Mary. “I know only this way. The bus always goes like this， so the other children can take it to school.”
