        (A)

Visitors to Britain are sometimes surprised to learn that newspapers there have such a large circulation(發(fā)行量). The Daily Mirror and the Daily Express both sell about four million copies every day. British families generally buy a newspaper every morning and two or three on Sundays.

Besides the national papers, there is, however, another branch of the British press which sells almost as many copies. Local(地方的)newspapers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Almost every town and country area has one. Nearly all of them hold their own finance(財政) and many of them are very profitable(賺錢).

These papers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events—births, weddings, deaths, council meetings(地方會議)and sports. Editors(編輯) prefer to rely(依靠) on people who know the district well. A great deal of local news is regularly supplied by clubs and churches in the neighbourhood and it does not get out of date as quickly as national news.

The editors must never forget the success of any newspaper depends on advertising(廣告). It is usually anxious to keep the good will of local businessmen for this reason. But if the newspaper is well written and the news items have been carefully chosen to draw local readers, the businessmen are grateful for the opportunity(機會) to keep their products in the public eyes.

        1. Visitors to Britain are surprised to learn that ____.

        A. there are so many local newspapers there

        B. local papers should have a circulation of four million

        D. British newspapers are so widely read

        2. Local newspapers have ____.

        A. a circulation as large as that of national newspapers

        B. a daily circulation of 13 million

        C. an evidently smaller circulation than national newspapers

        D. an even larger circulation than national newspapers

        3. Which of the following is true? ____.

        A. Every town and country area has at least one paper of its own

        B. Nearly all towns and country areas have their own papers

        C. There is a paper, national or local, in each town and country area

        D. A lot of distant towns and country areas do not have their own papers

        (B)

BEIJINGS markets will soon be flooded with more and cheaper colourful fruit such as orange mangos(芒果) and green durian(榴蓮) all the year round.

Thanks to a new free trade agreement signed last Monday between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN), more and more tropical Southeast Asian fruit will enter the country.

The agreement means that from July 1, 2005, China and ASEAN countries will begin to cut tariffs. There are about 7,000 products included in the cuts.

As global communication develops, countries are trading more and more goods with each other. When products are sold across national boundaries(邊界), countries put a tax on them. This type of tax is called a tariff.

Just like removing an obstacle from the path of these goods, thereduction of tariffs will encourage trade between China and ASEAN countries. It means more products and lower prices.

The agreement will bring real benefit for Chinese customers, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. “In the Beijing markets you will easily find more tropical fruit like durian, which used to be very, very expensive. Now they will be cheaper.” The current (existing now)tariff rate on durian is 22 percent but will fall to zero in 2005.

In the first 10 months of this year, China did US $84.6 billion of trade with ASEAN countries. Experts believe this may reach $100 billion next year.

Founded in 1967, ASEAN now includes Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

        1. More and more tropical fruits will enter China because ____.

        A. there are too many of them in foreign countries

        B. an agreement to cut tariffs was made

        C. Chinese people are rich enough to afford them

        D. the trading business is thriving

        2. A tariff is money paid ____.

        A. when buying goods

        B. to sell or buy products of foreign brand names

        C. to sell or buy goods across the border of the country

        D. to go through the customs

        3. We can infer from the passage that ____.

        A. the Chinese lacks fruits

        B. tariffs are an important factor in foreign trade

        C. tropical countries have cheaper fruits

        D. China prefers to trade with ASEAN countries

        4. The best title for this passage is ____.

        A. Tariff Cut Boost Trade

        B. Best Ways To Sell Fruits

        C. Tropical Fruit To China

        D. China Joins ASEAN

        (C)

Money spent on advertising is money spent as well as any I know of. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, so setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide for export(出口) at good prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need for labour, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, the price of your television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or subway would cost more.

And perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament(國會) govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so forlong, for the public has the good sense not to buy the poor goods more than once. If you see product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what is promised for it, and that it has good value.

Advertising does more for the good of the public than any other force I can think of.

There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade.

If its message were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, for even the choice of the color of a shirt is a bit persuasive(有說服力的)—advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television person wants.

        1. In the passage, which of the following is NOT included in the

        advantages of advertising? ____.

        A. Securing greater fame B. Providing more jobs

        C. Raising living standards D. Reducing newspaper cost

        2. The author deems(認為,相信) that the well-known TV person is ____.

        A. very precise in passing his judgement on advertising

        B. interested in nothing but the buyers attention

        C. correct in telling the difference between persuasion and informa- tion

        D. obviously partial in his views on advertising

        3. What attitude does the author hold for advertising? ____.

        A. Negative B. Positive C. Ridiculous D. Not stated

        (D)

Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student, “Operates under the theory of whats mine is mine and whats yours is mine,” says his mother. “The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers(劍). Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones.”

“Examine the extended family, and youll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. Its an inheritable trait,” says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance(支配地位) when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.

Whether its inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands of the young isnt healthy for children or the family. Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation, “have secret feelings of weakness” and “a desire to feel safe.” Its the parents role to provide that protection.

When a “bossy child” doesnt learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.

“I see more and more parents giving up their power,” says Barkley, who has studied bossy behavior for more than 30 years. “They bend too far because they dont want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious.”

        1. Bossy children like Stephen Jackson ____.

        A. make good decisions B. show self-centeredness

        C. lack care from others D. have little sense of fear

        2. The underlined phrase “inheritable trait” in Paragraph 2 means ____.

        A. inborn nature B. developed character

        C. accepted theory D. particular environment

        3. The study on bossy behavior implies that parents ____.

        A. should give more power to their children

        B. should be strict with their children

        C. should not be so anxious about their children

        D. should not set limits for their children

        4. Bossy children may probably become ____.

        A. relaxed B. skillful C. hesitant D. lonely

        5. What is the passage mainly about? ____.

        A. How bossy behavior can be controlled

        B. How we can get along with bossy children

        C. What leads to childrens bossy behavior

        D. What effect bossy behavior brings about

        Ⅳ.閱讀填空(每小題2分,滿分20分)

Small moments sometimes last a very long time. And a few words—though they mean little at the time to the people who say them—can have great power.

I recently heard a story from Malcolm Dalkoff, who has been a professional writer for the last 24 years, mostly in advertising.

As a boy, Dalkoff was terribly shy and helpless. He had few friends and no self-confidence. Then one day, his high-school English teacher, Ruth Brauch, asked the class to write their own chapter that would follow the last chapter of the novel since they had been reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Dalkoff wrote his chapter and turned it in. His teacher wrote four words in the paper: “This is good writing.” Four words. They changed his life.

“Until I read those words, I had no idea of who I was or what I was going to be,” he said. “After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story, something I had always dreamed of doing but never believed I could do.”

Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to Mrs Brauch for instruction. “She was encouraging, helpful and honest. She was just what I needed,” Dalkoff said.

Later he was chosen as a co-editor of his high-school newspaper. His confidence grew; his knowledge broadened; he started off on a successful life with great achievements.

For his 30th high-school reunion, Dalkoff went back and visited Mrs Brauch, who had retired. He told her what great effect the four words had had upon his life and because she had given him the confidence to be a writer, he had been able to pass that confidence on to his wife—would become his wife, who became a writer herself.
