Jay Chou（周杰倫） is a very popular Taiwanese singer. He was born on January 18，1979 in Taipei，Taiwan. He grew up with his mother. His mother was a middle school teacher. Jay showed great interest in music. He began to play the piano at the age of 3. While he was a third-grade student in elementary school，he developed an interest in cello（大提琴） and had daily cello lessons.
When he was 14，his parents got divorced； as a result，he became very independent，quiet and anti-social（反社會）. In June of 1996，Jay didnt pass the entrance exam to his selected university. So he couldnt find a good job，and then he became a waiter. Jay really entered the music industry when he appeared in a talent show as a pianist with his friend. The producer found his talent in writing lyrics（歌詞） and decided to give him a chance. He was hired to write music for others.
In 2000，Jay released his first album Jay，and the album became popular at once. It gained great attention in Taiwan and the international Han community（華語世界）. When his second album Fantasy was released，he was already one of the top pop stars in Asia.
