在西方國(guó)家，老鼠分為mouse和rat，mouse是指形態(tài)較小的老鼠或是田鼠，rat是指?jìng)€(gè)頭稍大的老鼠或者山鼠，鼠年用英語表達(dá)就是Year of the Mouse。

mouse還被用來表示“安靜、害羞、膽小的人”，其形容詞形式“mousy”可以表示“膽怯的、安靜的”，還可以表示“灰褐色的、沒有吸引力的”。從二十世紀(jì)五十年代開始，在英語口語里，mouse常指一個(gè)“沒有多少女子氣質(zhì)的或不太謙遜的女孩”。在美國(guó)英語里，mouse還可以指“拳擊比賽中眼部被擊傷后留下的青腫”。近年來，隨著互聯(lián)網(wǎng)時(shí)代的到來，mouse又被賦予了新的含義——鼠標(biāo)。

rat除了表示老鼠外，還表示“內(nèi)奸、告密者”，to rat on意思是“告發(fā)、背叛”。
