Three passions，simple but overwhelminglystrong，have governed my life：the longingfor love，the search for knowledge，andunbearable pity for the suffering of mankind．These passions，like great winds，have blownme hither and thither，in a wayward course，over a deep ocean of anguish，reaching to thevery verge of despair．
