        我眼中的趙濤

        Having interviewed several stars, including famous film director Jia Zhangke only the day before, I can't say that I was exactly nervous when waiting to come face to face with Zhao Tao, one of my favorite actresses. I was, however, excited. She is, after all, the woman who brought life to Jia's best films and an artist whose loyalty to Jia is mythical. In many ways, meeting her is an even bigger deal than meeting Jia himself. OK, so perhaps I was a little nervous.

        As I waited, I shuffled through my notes, re-reading the questions I had written a couple of days before when I first learned that she would be available. My questions included such basic ones as \"How did you meet Jia?\" \"What is it like to work with him?\" and \"How are you preparing for your upcoming film?\" But I also wanted to know more about her interpretations of the films she had starred in. For instance, I wanted her to clear up my confusion regarding the final lines of her film The World. In that movie, one character asks another if they are dead. Her character answers, \"No, this is just the beginning.\" I wanted her to elaborate on this answer. Also, I was hoping she could give me insight into her craft and tell me how she makes decisions when acting.

        I had read over my questions well. And I was testing my tape recorder for the umpteenth time when there was a knock at the door. It was her, though not as I knew her. In the movies, Zhao is often dressed down. Still, she looks every bit the star. In person, she is so much more approachable. Even though she has a slim, well-disciplined body and a beautiful face, she is not so different from several other beautiful women that I had passed while walking to the hotel.

        I think that my surprise must have shown through, because Zhao's publicist, also our translator for the interview, asked me if Zhao looks the same in person as she does in the movies. I had to admit that, no, she didn't look the same. However, I didn't explain myself. I was a little worried about offending her. I have heard that actresses could be sensitive. I was even concerned that she would call off the interview if I said the wrong thing.

        What a relief it was to find out that Zhao wasn't as delicate as I had thought. She was comfortable and amiable, answering questions that I asked her with grace and charm. She told me how she met Jia, saying that the director searched for six months for an actress to appear in Platform. In his search, he visited the university she was teaching at. He saw her and then knew that he had stumbled upon something special; Zhao has been in every one of his feature films since.

        After a few minutes of talking with the actress, I began to see more and more of what Jia must have seen when he first met her. Zhao is expressive but demure, she listens well, and her speech is fluent. That is, when most people talk, they do so with frequent stops and stutters, inappropriate pauses and inflexions, and word choices that they reconsider and then correct. When Zhao speaks, however, she does none of these things. Though she was never trained as an actress, she has a natural gift that gives her grace. She was also amazingly patient with my list of questions, which was, on paper, as long as my arm.

        I asked her about Jia, what it is like to work with him. She said that they have a strong friendship and that she is enormously grateful to him. For Jia introduced her not just to a world of cinema that she hadn't known, but he also taught her there was so much more to the world than she could've ever imagined. Before she met Jia, she believed that the world is a happy place where good people do good things. Jia, she said, taught her the darkness of life.

        I asked her if this new understanding of the world is good for her.

        But then she considered it. After a few moments of deep thought, she said that a person must be willing to face the truth of the world, whatever the truth entailed. A person is a fool if he goes through life misguided. And the truth is that darkness exists in all people. All people are capable of doing dark acts and of feeling sadness. This sadness is not natural for her, but she is now able to understand it better.

        One of the most interesting things she said to me is that on the set of Still Life, Jia encouraged some of this sadness out of her. The character she was playing was supposed to be melancholy. So Jia told everyone else on the set not to talk to her, ever. As a result, Zhao felt alienated and depressed. It was hard for her, yet Jia's little trick helped her give her best performance to date.

        This was my interview with the great actress. She didn't answer some of my questions, patently refusing to give me hints about the mysteries behind her films. When I asked her about The World's ending, she said that I must figure out the ending for myself. \"This is what every viewer should do\", she said. She also refused to answer questions about her personal life, questions that I shouldn't have asked in the first place but only did because Valentine's Day was coming up and I wanted to hear her view about love. So, Zhao remains a mystery, even after speaking with me for about an hour. The only thing I can be sure of is that she is an exceptional individual. And even though she repeatedly states that she is so fortunate to work with Jia, I think that Jia may be luckier for the chance to work with her.
