Pakistan has rescheduled its general elections for February 18th， following the killing of former Prime Minister and opposition leader Benazhir Bhutto on December 27th.

Bhutto， who had returned to Pakistan in October after eight years of self-imposed exile， was assassinated in a suicide attack just a week before Pakistan's elections were to begin.

The elections， originally due to be held on January 8th， have now been moved back to February 18th in a move that has brought criticism of the government. The head of Pakistan's electoral commission， Qazi Mohammed Farooq， said that violence and rioting following the death of the two-time Prime Minister had prompted the decision to delay the voting， but opposition parties have denounced the delay， even though they have agreed to abide by the ruling.

Senator Babar Ashwan， of the Pakistan People's Party， claimed that \"(President Pervez) Musharraf fears outright defeat. If this election process is jeopardized， they (PPP supporters) may protest again and there is a chance of riots.\"

President Musharraf announced that the military and police would be deployed to ensure the election ran peacefully and without interruption. He also announced that there would be a full investigation into the assassination.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has offered to send British police officers to Pakistan to help the investigation.
