Amicrowave oven cooks with…well, microwaves. What are they, and how do they works?
Well, first, microwaves are a form of energy similar to radio and TV waves. They are sent into the cooking area through openings at the top of the oven. Microwaves reflect off the metal walls of the oven, passing through glass, paper, and microwave-safe dishes.
Microwaves cause water molecules (分子) in food to vibrate(振動(dòng)), 450 million times per second. As the water molecules vibrate, they rub against each other, producing friction. This friction causes the food to get hot.
Just think how hot your hands would get if you rubbed your palms(手掌) together2,450,000,000 times per second!
