Much to my surprise, Chinese scholars have an average lifespan of only 58 years, according to a report --about ten years shorter than that of the overall Chinese population. This is hardly accountable in terms of common sense. Compared with uprooted migrant laborers, they're far from overworked. Placed alongside laid-offs, they seem under no great pressure. Measured against the more deprived millions in rural China, they're close to living in luxury!
