Kitty meets Dr. Walter Fane， a bacteriologist at her family party in London. After a couple of dates， Kitty is surprised at his seriousness in asking for her hand. Since she is getting older and being pressured by her parents to find a man to marry，she accepts Waiter's proposal. Soon after their wedding， Walter gets a job in a governmentlaboratory in Shanghai， China. After moving to Shanghai with him in 1925， Kitty feels bored with her silent husband， who seems interested in nothing but his work in the lab. At the invitation of Charlie Townsend， the vice-consul3in Shanghai， Walter and Kitty attend a Peking opera performance. Kitty is immediately amused by Charlie's humor and wit in explaining the plot of the drama， and thereaftersurrenders to his seduction despite the fact that both of them are married.
