if和whether都是連詞，兩者都有“是否”的意思，但if還有“如果”“假如”之意，在使用上，兩者有一定的區(qū)別。

1．if和wether均可引導(dǎo)賓語從句，其意為“是否”，常用在know，wonder，ask等一類動詞之后。如：

I don’t know if／whether I shouldtell you．我不知道我是否應(yīng)該告訴你。

注意：if／whether引導(dǎo)的賓語從句，可根據(jù)需要用任何時(shí)態(tài)。如：

I asked Aether／if he could comewith me．

2．if可以引導(dǎo)條件狀語從句，其意為“如果”“假如”，如：

If you don’t study hard，you will failin the exam．如果你不努力學(xué)習(xí)，你考試就會不及格。

注意：(1)if引導(dǎo)的條件狀語從句中，主句用一般將來時(shí)，從句只能用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)。

(2)whether沒有“如果”之意，上例不能用whether替換iF。

3．在下列情況下用whether，不用if。

(1)與or not連用時(shí)，如：

Let me know whether you like thisshirt not．讓我知道你是否喜歡這件襯衫。

(2)引導(dǎo)的從句作介詞賓語時(shí)，用whether。如：

I worry about whether I hurt herfeeling．我擔(dān)心是否傷了她的感情。

(3)賓語從句置于句首時(shí)，用Whether。如：

Whether she will go to zoo．I don’tknow．她是否去動物園，我不清楚。

(4)用在動詞不定式前面時(shí)，用whether。如：

I don’t know whether to leave orstay．我不知道走好還是留下好。

(5)引導(dǎo)主語從句、表語從句或同位語從句時(shí)，用whether。如：

Whether hc is coming or not is stilla question．他是否來還是個(gè)問題。

4．whether也可引導(dǎo)狀語從句，其意為“不管……是否”“不管是……還是”。如：

Whether you go(or not)，he will go．不管你是否去，他都會去。

注意：這里不能用if代替whether。
