prefer最常見的意思是“寧可”、“寧愿(選擇)”、“比較喜歡”、“更喜歡”等， 可以構(gòu)成以下結(jié)構(gòu)。

一、prefer sth.

“Do you like French?”“Yes， but I prefer English.”“你喜歡法語嗎?”“喜歡，但是我更喜歡英語。”

“Which do you prefer， rice or bread?”“Either will do.”“你比較喜歡吃什么，米飯還是面包？”“隨便哪一個(gè)都行?！?/p>

注：prefer是“比較喜歡、更喜歡”的意思，即like better，因此不能再與better， more等比較級(jí)詞語連用。

二、prefer over sth.

I prefer over this newly-built lab， and you? 我比較喜歡這個(gè)新建的實(shí)驗(yàn)室，你呢？

They prefer over new works that sing of their life today. 他們更喜歡歌頌他們今天生活的新作品。

三、prefer sth. above all others

I prefer the book above all others. 我最喜歡這本書。

The middle-aged man prefers swimming above all others. 這位中年人最喜歡游泳。

四、prefer A to B

I prefer the original book to the revised edition. 我覺得原書比修訂本好。

Those Red Army men preferred death to surrender in their struggle with the enemy. 在對(duì)敵斗爭(zhēng)中，那些紅軍戰(zhàn)士寧死不屈。

五、prefer doing A to doing B

Even on holidays Mr. Wang preferred reading to doing nothing. 即使在假日，王先生寧愿讀書而不愿閑著。

注：在這種結(jié)構(gòu)中，to為介詞，而不是不定式符號(hào)，故其后應(yīng)當(dāng)接動(dòng)名詞形式，絕不能接動(dòng)詞原形。另外，為了保持前后對(duì)應(yīng)關(guān)系，prefer后面也應(yīng)當(dāng)接動(dòng)名詞形式。

六、prefer to do sth.

They prefer to spend the rest of the morning wandering in the streets. 他們比較喜歡把早上剩下的時(shí)間都用來在街上閑逛。

七、prefer doing sth.

So you prefer speaking without referring to your notes? 這么說，你更喜歡不看稿子做報(bào)告了？

Mr. Brown preferred spending his spare time doing some reading. 布朗先生比較喜歡把業(yè)余時(shí)間用來讀點(diǎn)書。

注：這種prefer后面接動(dòng)名詞的結(jié)構(gòu)，用來談?wù)撘话闱闆r下“更喜歡某種活動(dòng)”，而在一個(gè)特定場(chǎng)合下表示“特別喜歡”時(shí)，得用上述prefer后接動(dòng)詞不定式結(jié)構(gòu)。

八、prefer to do sth. rather than do sth.

These workers preferred to work extra hours at night rather than leave the work until the next week. 這些工人寧愿加班干，也不愿把工作留到下一個(gè)星期。

注：這種結(jié)構(gòu)中的rather than可以置于句首。例如：

Rather than go on holiday to the seaside I prefer to work days and go to school nights. 我寧愿白天工作，晚上上學(xué)，而不愿到海邊度假。

注：有時(shí)rather可以移至第一個(gè)不定式之前，而讓than留在第二個(gè)不定式之前，即為prefer rather…than結(jié)構(gòu).這種用法多見于書面語言，在口語中很少用。例如：

She prefers rather to sew than to knit. 她喜歡縫紉而不愛編織。

九、prefer to do sth. rather than doing sth.

They prefer to join in the celebrations rather than going on a visit to the Palace Museum. 他們寧愿參加慶祝活動(dòng)而不愿參觀故宮。

注：有時(shí)名詞也可用于rather than之后，這種用法多用來表示在某種具體場(chǎng)合的選擇。例如：

“What shall we have for lunch， rice or buns?”“I prefer rice rather than buns.”“我們午飯吃什么，米飯還是圓面包？”“我寧可吃米飯也不想吃圓面包?！?/p>

這句話表示：在這種具體的場(chǎng)合“我寧可吃米飯”。實(shí)際可視為在prefer 和rather than之后均省略了to have。

注：有時(shí)該結(jié)構(gòu)前后兩個(gè)不定式意思相同，僅各自帶有不同的修飾附加成分，那么第二個(gè)不定式可以省略，只保留不同的修飾附加成分而置于rather than之后。例如：

十二、prefer sth. (or sb.)+adj.
